Radon Awareness: Why Testing Matters in Calgary

Radon Awareness: Why Testing Matters in Calgary.

A national study by the Evict Radon National Study website highlights the serious health risks posed by radon — a colourless, odourless, radioactive gas that can build up in homes and is a leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Radon exposure is entirely preventable, but only if homeowners know their risk and test for it.

According to recent data, Calgary’s average residential radon levels are among the highest in Canada, with about one in six homes exceeding Health Canada’s guideline of 200 Bq/m³ — a threshold at which mitigation is recommended. Levels across neighbourhoods can vary widely, and many areas in northwest Calgary have been shown to register some of the region’s most elevated indoor radon measurements.

Because radon has no taste, smell, or colour, the only way to know if your home has elevated levels is to test it. Health Canada recommends long-term testing (90+ days) for accurate results, and the Evict Radon study provides resources to help residents understand and act on their radon risk.

Homeowners are encouraged to learn more about testing and mitigation to protect their families from this invisible health hazard. For more information and to order your Radon Test Kit, visit https://evictradon.org
